The Art of Naming Your Podcast

One of the first hurdles is naming your podcast. Choose something unique and memorable. Avoid names that are already claimed, as this can lead to confusion and potential trademark issues. If you absolutely love a name used by an inactive podcast, consider reaching out to see if they would allow you to use it. Remember, if you have the budget, trademarking your podcast name is a wise investment.

Getting Your Podcast on Players

Podcasts reach listeners through hosting platforms like Buzzsprout and Spotify for Podcasters. After setting up an account, upload your trailer, and submit your podcast to various platforms. This can be slightly time-consuming but is crucial for reaching your audience.

Investing in Podcast Gear

While it’s possible to start podcasting with basic gear, investing in quality equipment can significantly impact your show’s quality and listener retention. If you’re committed to podcasting long-term, consider budgeting for microphones and other necessary tools. You can find some of my favorite gear recommendations here.

Technical Planning: Launching with a Bang

Select a launch date, and then nine days prior, submit your podcast trailer to different podcast platforms. This allows enough time for approval. Once your podcast is live, encourage friends and family to leave reviews, establishing credibility before your official launch.

Consistent Content Release

To remain on listeners’ radar, podcasts must be released consistently. Apple Podcasts, for instance, will stop automatic downloads if a show isn’t updated every 14 days. Consistent releases, even just replays, ensure you stay connected with your audience.

Recording Your Podcast

Deciding on how to record your show depends on your preferences and budget. While Zoom and GarageBand are viable options, tools like Riverside and Squadcast are recommended for higher quality and seamless workflows, especially if you plan to use video for your podcast promotion.

Editing Professionally

Descript is highly recommended for podcast editing. It’s user-friendly for non-professionals and allows for efficient editing processes. The key is to ensure your edits are smooth and natural, even when using AI tools. Our team uses Logic and Descript depending on the needs of our client.

Selecting and Using Music

Music adds flair to your podcast but must be used legally. Secure royalty-free music licenses from sources like Premium Beat or Pond5. Ensure you remain compliant if using subscription services for your music tracks.

Monetizing Your Podcast

Monetization is a thriving aspect of podcasting and is achievable for small podcasts too. Build an audience ready to engage before launching, and consider securing sponsorships that align with your listeners’ interests. Use audience insights and engagement rates to develop compelling pitches for potential sponsors.
