How to Boost Your Podcast Listenership, Monetization Tips, and More

I’m answering some of the burning questions you’ve been asking about podcasting! From my recent experience with Threads and how it’s helped me connect with fellow podcasters, to actionable tips for boosting your listenership, understanding the importance of editing, and exploring monetization strategies for small podcasts, this episode is packed with insights. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your podcasting process, these rapid-fire Q&A sessions will provide you with the clarity you need to make informed decisions for your show.

Using Threads for Podcasting

I initially gave up on Threads after its release, but after hearing from friends and clients, I decided to give it another go. I found that the algorithm on the “For You” page is really effective at connecting me with other podcasters and those interested in podcasting. It’s been a great way to ask questions, engage in conversations, and expand my network.

Boosting Podcast Listenership

If you’re looking to grow your audience, the first thing to remember is to consistently talk about and market your podcast. Many podcasters, myself included, often miss out on opportunities by not promoting their episodes enough. I also recommend borrowing audiences by guest appearing on other podcasts or collaborating with influencers. Paid advertising is another option, but I suggest starting with podcast-specific platforms like MoPod or Player FM.

Editing Pros and Cons

As a podcast producer, I believe editing is crucial for creating a polished listening experience that keeps your audience coming back. While editing takes time or money, it’s worth it for removing awkward pauses, filler words, and overlapping conversations. However, not every podcast needs extensive editing—some shows do well without it. But for most, even minimal editing can make a significant difference.

Monetization for Small Podcasts

There are several ways to monetize a small podcast. Brand partnerships and sponsorships are possible even for smaller shows, though they might look different than for larger podcasts. I also monetize through affiliate marketing and selling my own products. These methods have worked well for me and my clients, and they’re worth considering if you’re looking to generate income from your podcast.

Understanding Podcast Charts

I use Charitable to track how my podcast and my clients’ podcasts are performing on various charts. While it’s exciting to see your show rank, the charts fluctuate frequently and aren’t always a reliable measure of success. It’s cool to be able to say you’re a chart-topping podcast, but I wouldn’t stress too much if you’re not consistently on the charts. Check out Your Guide to Understanding Podcast Charts for more info.

Podcast Episode Titling

When it comes to titling your podcast episodes, I lean towards being direct and clear. While catchy titles might grab attention, a straightforward title that tells listeners exactly what the episode is about often performs better, especially from an SEO perspective. Sometimes, I’ll use different titles for the podcast player and the blog post to optimize for both clarity and searchability.

Advice for Solo Podcasters

If you feel like you’re doing this podcasting journey alone, you’re not alone! My first piece of advice is to find a podcast bestie—someone else in the podcasting world who can support and inspire you. You can connect with other podcasters through Threads or various online communities. Additionally, working with a podcast producer can provide the feedback and encouragement you need to keep going. Lastly, consider joining a podcast community like Mic Check Society, where you can connect with others, attend trainings, and find the support you need.

Riverside is perfect for recording solo episodes, interviews, and even virtual trainings. My favorite feature is Magic Clips, which lets you create social media-ready clips with just a click.
