In the last year, I noticed quite a few trends in the podcasting world. I saw what my clients went through and what I personally experienced. From there, I came up with these 5 tips that can help you successfully host your podcast this year.
Tip 1: Create Content For Your Podcast From a Place of Abundance
Here, I’m specifically talking about quality over quantity. I’m saying this as someone who truly believes that your podcast should have a consistent frequency. If you are releasing weekly, stick to it! Keep it consistent.
I so often see podcasters fading. They get overwhelmed or burnt out in their podcast, life, or business. Something keeps them from creating from a place of abundance. I would much rather see you push pause or scale back in your podcast than experience this burnout. We actually covered pausing your podcast in episodes 84 & 85! I believe that if you’re creating content for your podcast, you need to be in the right headspace. If you don’t your audience will hear it, your listenership will fall off, and you won’t be creating the content you set out to create.
Tip 2: Batch Your Content
This is something that I truly struggle with. When I fall off my batching schedule, I tend to fall short. 2023 is my year, I want to have everything batched out.
I understand, there will be times when you want to release relevant content to a specific time. That is totally fine, you can still batch. If you are a podcast that is relevant to a time-sensitive topic, my recommendation is to throw in evergreen batched content. Then you don’t have to create new content week after week. You can easily fall behind if you are making new content week to week.
What I like to do when batching for myself is to batch out a whole month’s worth of content. Then it will be released without me having to think about it. I am able to record, edit, and create show notes and graphics the month before, and completely schedule it out. Then I don’t have to do anything for almost a whole month. I do this once a month and am ahead for the next month.
If you’re working with a post-production company, like Gaffin Creative, you’re only recording for a few hours a month. Then you hand it off to your producer and they do the rest.
I actually learned about batching from Amanda Warfield, check out the episode of Clocking In with Amanda here.
Tip 3: Align Your Podcast Content with Your Podcast Goal
I have talked so many times about podcast goals. A goal that will serve you in some capacity. Align your podcast content to serve that specific goal. A lot of times we will see podcasters creating content to solely serve their audience. There isn’t anything wrong with this, but your goal should be considered when you create content. Otherwise, how are you going to achieve your goal?
That could look like putting ads or sponsors in your podcast or creating content that directly drives sales to aspects of your business. Then you are able to achieve those goals and help your business succeed.
Tip 4: Pay Attention to Your Podcast Audio Quality
Podcast audio quality is so important to your podcast because it drives the listener experience. If you don’t have quality audio, you will lose listeners. I, myself, have turned off podcasts because of how rough they sounded. I know the content was probably great, but the podcast was hard to listen to. I don’t want you to be the person that happens to.
Now, inside of Mic Check Society, we have released a training about ensuring you have quality audio. Head over there now to check that out. Get $10 off per month with code PODCAST at micchecksociety.com.
In addition to that, if your guests are the ones with bad quality, we are releasing an episode about just that next week.
Tip 5: Build Systems that Work to Ease Podcast Production
The reason I say this is because there are so many moving elements to a podcast episode. I think that having a place where you can store it all, like a project management system, is so valuable to you and your team. Building these systems can be so beneficial to you.
These systems don’t just include your production process. This could also include pitching your podcast guests.
You want to make sure that everything you’re doing in the process of producing your podcast is as simple and as easy as possible. It’s simpler for you and for any team member you have. Your team members can know what to do and know what their role is in the process. You also have clear timelines and due dates. All of this is so valuable and important to have in one place.
When you have this simplified you have more time to focus on strategizing and marketing for your podcast.
Those are my five tips for hosting a podcast in 2023. I know that throughout this year I will be sharing more tips, so stay tuned!
