Getting Started with Your Podcast

Launching a podcast might seem daunting, but with some basic knowledge, you can make it a smooth process. Here are three essential steps Myrna and I discussed for starting your podcast:

  1. Choose a Podcast Hosting Platform:
    • Myrna and I recommend platforms like Libsyn, Acast, and Blueberry.
  2. Set Up a Podcast Website:
    • It’s essential to have a dedicated space on your existing website or a new site specifically for your podcast. This space should house show notes, resources, and more.
    • This isn’t just for SEO but also a way to keep all your podcast-related content accessible and organized.
  3. Invest in Quality Audio and Music:
    • While a high-quality microphone is ideal, you can initially start with wired headphones if budget constraints exist.
    • Don’t overlook licensed music for your intro and outro. Even budget-friendly options can provide a professional touch to your episodes.

Transcribing Your Podcast for Greater Accessibility

Transcriptions are non-negotiable for accessibility. They cater to the hearing-impaired community and improve your SEO. While transcription services can be costly, options like Descript, Rev, and Otter offer different levels of accuracy and pricing to meet various needs.

Enhancing User Experience Through Transcriptions

Including transcriptions not only aids the deaf community but benefits everyone, including those who prefer reading content or need it in environments where audio can’t be played. Here are some tips for making your transcripts user-friendly:

  • Provide timestamps for easy navigation.
  • Ensure clarity by labeling speakers.
  • Integrate show notes with links to referenced websites and resources.

As we’ve discussed, starting a podcast and making it accessible aren’t just current trends—they are fundamental aspects of building a connected, inclusive, and effective digital presence. Myrna and I hope our insights inspire you to explore podcasting and consider the impact of accessibility on your audience reach and engagement.
