The Hard Truth About Podcasting and Profit

Business owners love to create content. It’s in our DNA. We thrive on sharing our ideas, showing up for our audiences, and adding value. But here’s the truth most podcasters have to learn (the hard way): just because you’re consistent doesn’t mean you’re profitable.

In fact, your podcast could be keeping you busy without ever driving real results.
And if your show isn’t aligned with what you sell, then you’re essentially offering free value to the wrong audience—or worse, to no one in particular.

My Misaligned Podcast Era

When I launched Clocking In in 2021, I poured my heart into it. I talked about everything: tax prep, rental studios, money lessons from my mom—you name it. The episodes were heartfelt, packed with solid advice, and I loved making them.

But they didn’t convert.

Why? Because I wasn’t talking to podcasters. I wasn’t showcasing what I did best—helping business owners build profitable, strategic podcasts. I wasn’t leading listeners anywhere. My content was good, but it wasn’t aligned.

And that’s where so many business owners get stuck. It’s not about how much content you create—it’s about how strategically it connects to your business.

The Podcast Alignment Traffic Light Exercise

Inside my Podcast Profits Workshop, I’ll walk you through six “traffic lights” that help identify exactly why a podcast is or isn’t working. But today, I want to share just one of them with you: Business & Offer Alignment.

Here’s how it works.

Take out a red, yellow, and green marker (or just use a pen), and rate yourself on the following five statements:

  1. My primary offer aligns with my podcast. When someone listens, do they clearly understand what you do and what you sell?
  2. My topics match what I sell. Each episode should support your product suite—not distract from it.
  3. My episodes position me as the expert. Not just a host or a storyteller, but the trusted expert your audience needs.
  4. My episodes solve real problems for my ideal clients. No fluff. No filler. Just actionable solutions tied directly to your services.
  5. I speak to my ideal client every time. Not to the masses, not to random listeners—to the people most likely to hire you.

Rate each one:

  • Green = Solid, no improvements needed.
  • Yellow = Some room for improvement.
  • Red = Big gap, needs attention.

When you’re done, look at your chart. Seeing lots of reds? That’s not failure—it’s clarity. Mostly yellows? You’re one tweak away from major traction. All greens? Bless you, alignment unicorn.

Why Alignment Comes Before Monetization

Most podcasters want to talk about monetization—sponsors, funnels, premium content. But here’s what I’ve learned: you can’t optimize something that’s not aligned.

If your show isn’t:

  • Connected to your business goals,
  • Designed to attract and serve your ideal client,
  • Structured to guide listeners toward conversion…

Then no sponsor or download milestone will change your bottom line.

That’s why alignment is always step one.
